[The South China] Sea dispute won’t affect diplomacy, official says

Wed, 22 July 2015

Cambodia’s close ties to China will not compromise its relationship with other regional powers, an official said after a meeting between Foreign Minister Hor Namhong and a top Chinese diplomat yesterday.
As tensions continue to simmer over control of the South China Sea, the scene of a bitter dispute between China and Vietnam – among others – Deputy Foreign Ministry Secretary Chem Vidhya denied that Cambodia was turning towards China due to ongoing border issues with Vietnam.
“We want to have the best relations with all powerful countries such as the US, China, Russia, France, England, and our economy is open to all,” Vidhya said following the meeting between Namhong and Xu Bu, the Chinese ambassador to ASEAN.
“Regarding the South China Sea conflict, Cambodia wants ASEAN and China to maintain good relations in order to stabilise the long-term security of Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.”
Vidhya added that the meeting between Namhong and Bu was largely to offer thanks for Chinese aid to Cambodia.
