PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – Prince Norodom Ranariddh, president of royalist Funcinpec Party, took aim at leaders of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) on Saturday, denouncing them for running political activities that cause the death and injury of fellow Cambodians.

In a speech delivered to the younger generation of his political party – more than 2,000 young people – at Koh Pich island, Prince Ranariddh said, “I would like to send a verbal message to Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha, whom I have rescued, that if you plan to launch the culture of dialogue, please don’t bring people death or suffering, instead of yourself, please think of national interests first.”

CNRP Fires Back

In response, Yem Ponhearith, CNRP spokesman, said it is not true that, as Prince Ranariddh said, CNRP leadership caused supporters to die or get injured during street protests and boycott of the National Assembly in 2013.

Both politicians were referring to the time period following the July 2013 parliamentary elections. When the CNRP failed to win a majority, Sam Rainsy, president of the CNRP and his deputy president of the party, Kem Sokha chose to boycott the National Assembly and to take the battle into the streets in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

Strikes and street protests followed what they called “the fraudulent national elections result.”

However, there were deaths and injuries during the political mayhem.

On July 22, 2014, almost one year after the elections, Mr. Rainsy and Prime Minister Hun Sen reached an agreement to end the political crisis. After a five-hour closed-door meeting, the heads of both political parties declared that the 55 CNRP lawmakers would take their seats in the National Assembly in September 2014.

Mr. Ponhearith said to Khmer Times: “We decided to join the meeting at the National Assembly because we bring about genuine change and demand to reform the National Election Committee body, which assumed free and fair elections for the next mandate.”

More Criticism of the Prince

Ou Virak, president of Future Forum Institute on Policy and Research, criticized Prince Ranariddh, saying “Prince Ranariddh is a cowardly person because he did not dare to criticize Cambodia’s government or Prime Minister Hun Sen, and he just runs the political party and is dependent on the government to keep the Funcinpec party alive.”

Mr. Virak also said that in general in a democratic society, demonstration or protest on the streets – that’s the opposition party’s right.

“However,” he continued, “they should have a code of conduct for avoidance any impolite words or insults to somebody else.”

At least CNRP remembered those lost their lives of 1997 grenades attacked. The CNRP leaders even honored those Khmer soldiers lost their lives to Hun Sen coupe. Where is Prince Norodom Ranariddh ? Those FUNCINPEC soldiers died for him. Prince Norodom Ranariddh was the past, he will never be Cambodian leader any more. He should be more like prince Norodom Sirevuth. prince Norodom Sirevuth served his peoples by been advisor to our king.
