Give our kids a better deal

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- The ruling Cambodian People's Party elected Prime Minister Hun Sen to succeed the late Chea Sim as party president on Saturday, Agence Kampuchea Presse reported.

The report said the CPP Central Committee also elected Senate President Say Chhum and Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Kheng as vice presidents to succeed Hun Sen who was previously deputy leader of the party.

AKP said 508 of the 545 members of the CPP Central Committee attended Saturday morning's congress which took place at the party headquarters in central Phnom Penh.

The vote came a day after a state funeral for Chea Sim who died on June 8 at the age of 82.

Chea Sim had been leading the party since 1991 when he succeeded Heng Samrin, general secretary of the former Khmer People's Revolutionary Party.

Heng Samrin, who chaired the United Front for the National Salvation of Kampuchea formed in 1978, is now president of the National Assembly and also serves as honorary president of the CPP.

Chea Sim had served as Heng Samrin's deputy in the united front which liberated the country with the overthrew of the Pol Pot regime on January 7, 1979.
