Opposition lawmakers will propose the cancellation of a 2005 amendment to a border treaty with Vietnam in the National Assembly.
Mao Monyvann and Um Sam An of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) plan to table the motion next month, but on top of the support of all 55 CNRP lawmakers, it will rely on garnering votes from members of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) for the bill to pass.
“We need seven more votes, but I believe we can find these seven votes because [the CPP] also has patriots,” Monyvann said on Monday.
The duo claim that cancelling the 2005 amendment would halt border disputes with Vietnam.
Speaking yesterday, Sam An said the CNRP is calling for the border map deposited at the United Nations to be enforced.
Senior government official on border affairs Va Kimhong could not be reached.
However, CPP lawmaker and National Assembly spokesman Chheang Vun derided the move.
“[The CNRP] can go ahead and do what it wants. These useless things are just a headache,” he said.
