One-third of Cambodians online thanks to mobile phones

PHNOM PENH (Xinhua) -- About one-third of Cambodians are connected to the Internet, with the number of online subscriptions increasing by 31 percent in 2014, local media reported on Thursday.
Auk Dorany, member of the Telecommunications Regulator of Cambodia, said as of January this year, there were just over 5 million Internet subscriptions in the country, up from about 3.8 million at the end of December 2013, The Cambodia Daily reported.
And Dorany said the overwhelming majority of Internet subscriptions were through mobile devices.
"Cambodia has two groups of users, the 'fixed' ones that use telephone or DSL lines, and those that use mobile devices including mobile phones and iPads," he was quoted by The Cambodia Daily as saying.
"About 98.67 percent of Internet subscriptions are from mobile devices."
Javier Sola, director of the NGO Open Institute, said Internet usage in the country was closely linked to the uptake of smartphones, which are cheaper and more accessible than computers.
"To access the Internet, you need a device, computers grow slowly, phones are much faster," he was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
Facebook, popular among young people, is a key driver of the growth of the Internet, said Sola, adding that Cambodians' ease of access to Internet was largely a result of pricing.
"It's one of the cheapest countries in the world for Internet access. You can have all the access you want for 5 U.S. dollars a month. This is very unusual. In a developing country, you pay 40 or 50 U.S. dollars for that," he said.

Begin of Drgunzet's comment.

The root of Cambodia's land grab is at the fancy smart phone.

Some Khmer oversea came back to Cambodia with iPhone to show off. Remember Khmenwatt boasting about owning iPhone5, and then later upgrade to iPhone6?

The local Khmer folks try to match, and buy their own fancy smart phone too. So, they sold land concessions to foreigners who would pay big bucks for the lands.

As the result, other Khmers are being kicked out of the lands.

-----------------

I have never owned any fancy expensive iPhone. My cellphone costs me only 20 dollars. There was time I did not even own a cellphone. And girls went nuts on me. They demanded me to get a cellphone or they will kick me out of the single club.

If you folks compete with talents, your wits instead of the fancy item, Cambodia will have a lot less problem. But you people have no talents, no brain. I don't know how you folks can even afford the iPhone.

Well observed! I could tell you're very smart bloke Drgunzet. I know many Khmers on this blog would hate your guts on this forum, but I think we need people like you as an outsider to tell these idiots just how stupid and showy they all are. I totally agree with you. Khmer people are crazy about showy things, they are lacking priorities and their stupidity often lead them into troubles financially.

The facts of the matter is this: they don't see they are the source of the problem but they kept on shifting their blame on their present day government, they blamed the Thai's, the Chinese, and above all Vietnamese for all the miseries they are going through. It's always the people outside of themselves who is the source of the problem but never themselves.
