PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Battambang Provincial Court on Monday detained a doctor suspected of spreading HIV to more than 100 people in Roka commune in Sangke district after health experts found out that the doctor was careless and lacked of hygiene when treating his patients.
As of last Saturday, 1,000 villagers in Roka commune had their blood tested for HIV and 140 of them were confirmed HIV positive, according opposition lawmaker Ke Sovanrath who visited the villagers in the area on Saturday.
Yem Chrin, unlicensed medical practitioner in Roka commune, was sent to the provincial court on Sunday for questioning a few days after his arrest following massive HIV outbreak in Battambang province.
The 55-year-old man confessed that he treated hundreds of patients in Roka commune for years, and also used to treat 20 HIV positive patients.
He told the police that he asked his children to set fire on medical waste on December 16 after finding out that some villagers were infected with HIV.
