CCHR Outcome report - Workshop for youth on electoral reform

Dear all,

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights ("CCHR") releases today – 19 August 2014 – an Outcome Report: Workshop for Youth on Electoral Reform (the "Outcome Report"). As the two main political parties, the Cambodian People's Party (“CPP”) and the Cambodian National Rescue Party (“CNRP”) finalize a political agreement addressing in part electoral reform, the report is attended to contribute substantive recommendations regarding political participation and election reform of youth participants, which were raised during the Workshop for Youth on Electoral Reform held on 20-21 June 2014 in Phnom Penh.

The Outcome Report highlights the keys issues regarding electoral reform that youth participants have identified. The following five main issues were agreed to put for the electoral reform:  the voter list, media during elections, the National Election Committee (“NEC”), the rights and freedom of voters in elections, and election transparency. Each issue was discussed comprehensively with concrete examples of the problem that happened during the recent National Assembly Election. Furthermore, the recommendations provided for each issue that were  identified by youth participants, provide clear steps that could be undertaken by the Royal Government of Cambodia, political parties and the NEC itself as part of a process of electoral reform.  The Outcome Report concluded by highlighting that electoral reform is an issue of relevance to Cambodia’s youth, who are becoming increasingly involved in democratic change in Cambodia.

Along with this Outcome Report, a short video recording of youth participants stating their main recommendations regarding the electoral reform is available via
